Momentus 5400.3 - Spindle or Stiction?

March 23rd, 2010, 10:19

Sorry mods  put this in the other forum by mistake.

What do you think, sticktion or spindle ( i guess latter). I have not worked on one of theses disks before and client wants an estimate BEFORE opening..

would guess spindle, sounds like vcm moving heads without spin, and possibly head/surface damage from that.

No offense but IMO diagnostic by guesswork is pretty silly.

no offense taken, but all my clients first questions are "how much, aprox." and in this case it was the same, but "don't open disk"... I will just give price range wide enough.. and see if they want to go forward. As i have never worked on this disk before I would probably outsource.

Any offers via PM please. Thanks

How does the client expect you to quote without opening the disk?

As I said, i give him a range: free stiction and image ... to platter swap (outsource) if he says OK i go ahead. He has no data-no fee guarantee.

The thread has a different purpose, it is not about how i deal with my customers. Thanks very much for the input.

i agree diagnostic is diagnostic and not guessing. no offense taken if you meant me, drc. just gave my opinion on this.

Nono, I was just saying it is unreasonable of the customer to ask for diagnostic without allowing you to do what you need to do to give a real diagnostic...

why lead by customer? you should be the leader in DR area. for this kind of case platters may have chance damaged already.

I wonder how the terminal log will give you more info about the actual cause of the problem...

I could not play the audio file, not familiar with the format. I am probably years behind  on what audio formats are available. That's why I asked for Terminal. Almost sure it will show just Buzz, Buzz. But it does not hurt to confirm.

Seems to be an Ericsson cell phone format [Adaptive Multi Rate]
Media player classic will play it. There's some free converters on the net e.g. http://www.amrtomp3converter.com/

Sounds to me like f/w modulation of the motor drive current, trying to get the motor spinning, especially the short beeps.
Mark me if I'm wrong, but the heads should remain parked until the motor is at the right speed?
