WD4000AAKS start failure

April 7th, 2010, 7:13

Hello gurus)
Subj WDC WD4000AAKS-00YGA0-12.01C02-WD-WCAS8527514
Powers on, spins up, few short silent clicks, spin down and ups again. After 3 times repeating this drive spins down completely. I need data from drive.
After series of tests I found a flash FW corruption: 07 and 08 mods have corrupted block CS`s (record CS`s is OK).
Is it really a FW corruption? Where to get a complete ROM? File archive have nothing suitable as I guess.
Also I must tell that there are word "ROYL" mentioned in some flash locations and modules (see attachment with logs).

What i have done so far: clean entire PCB and contacts of HDA with eraser and with solvent, examined fuses/TVS/3.3V supply (its OK). All this gave no effect.
Software: I had read flash, some modules. Check_wd utility said that there are corrupted files headers on different drive heads (see logs). While running utils drive spins up for aa short time and spins down after series of ckicks.

no just using P2 Cel 700MHz via Sata-to-IDE convertor StLab S-250 and external PSU, under DOS and COM utilities from nazyura.

Just a terminology thing, but drive firmware is not "flash"

HDD Spaz, you may be right, problem looks like Samsung LED13 Servo unlatch error and usually caused by bad head.
btw i`ve got similar flash 12.01C01, probably correct, and check utility also told it have CS error. so i`m not sure in flash error
