Your drive could be affected by the 7200.11 BSY bug.

If so, then you may be entitled to free data recovery.

See the following thread for more details, and a DIY fix:

Yes, by Seagate, not HDD Guru. :-)

I just had a client yesterday I was dealing with, drive came out of a Seagate external drive. Seagate completely denied responsibility saying the clients drive was not one of the affected, needless to say we verified that it was indeed. Client sent us the customer support chat log, they told him we were over simplifying the explanation of the issue, that his drive could not possibly be affected, and that we were wrong. After the client called the Seagate rep out on this the rep quickly asked if we opened the external, after the client answered yes the rep again quickly went on to deny any responsibility because the warranty was void and ceased conversation with the client.

I was less than impressed, we have always turned clients to Seagate when free recovery was offered by them, but this was dirty, client called and got the same answer.

Maybe at Seagate too they are tired. It's business.

maybe , then they just need to pull the offer for free recovery out and be done with it. Not lie to customers that they have a different issue.

Your right, but how many cases do they recieve that actually do have different problems? the symptoms of staying BSY with no clicking is present on cases with frozen spindles, and 0 LBA is present where heads are damaged. Not all users can correctly identify the problem, not all are familiar with hard disks at all.

Maybe they just enforce stricter guidelines now. As far as I know (but I may be wrong) the specific cause of the failure only affects disks manufactured within the first 6 months, so would make sense that the free recovery is limited to these revisions.

Wait, what was the fix? did Seagate recover your data or did you take care of the BSY bug yourself?
