IBM UltraStar 36.9GB not spinning up

April 14th, 2010, 6:08

Hi all,

I have a IBM UltraStar 36.9GB SCSI HDD with the following info on the label.

Model: DPSS-336950
MLC: PS0S92
PCB CODE: 07N4158 & F79987_

This drive basically doesn't spin up whatsoever. So I found a donor drive with the following info on the label

Model: DPSS-336950
MLC: PS0S92
PCB CODE: 07N4158 & F79987_

Both drives are almost identical except for S/N.

1st Attempt: Patient drive's TVS diodes are good as I tried them with multimeter and one showed .874 and the other showed .195.

2nd Attempt: I tried swapping the donor PCB to patient drive and power it on, it spin up freely. So I safely assumed that something is wrong with the patient drive PCB and not the spindle motor or anything like that.

Question
1. Do my donor drive compatible with the patient drive? I have matched the drive model, MLC and PCB codes.

2. Correct me if I'm wrong, after swapping the PCB I need to move the patient ROM to the donor PCB and that basically allows me to access the data in there?

Any hint is very much appreciated

Thanks
