PCB Needed For Seagate 320 GB 5400.5

The board appears to have a shorted TVS diode. If your PSU is OK, then you can remove this diode by desoldering it, or by snipping it out with flush cutters. The drive will work OK without it, but it will no longer have any protection from overvoltages.

I can't see on the photo, but sometimes there are resistors or fuses in series with the supply. If these are open circuit, then just bridge them with a short piece of wire, or replace them with a 2A picofuse.

Isnt it worth even considering what actually caused the damage, and more to the point if it will cause further problems running a disk with potentially damaged components such as preamp chip without any kind of protection on the PCB?

Nah, I think that mark is just a bit of the rubber from the pad that protects the PCB from the HDA.

But there is a reason WHY the TVS blew, so just snipping it off isn't ideal.

The damage was obviously caused by an overvoltage, ie an external event. The blown TVS diode is ample evidence of that. Or are you suggesting that some mysterious event on the PCB caused it to destroy its own protection diode?

A TVS diode is normally open circuit, so its presence, or absence, will have absolutely no effect on any vulnerable component, provided that the drive is connected to a good PSU. If some component subsequently fails after being supplied with its rated voltage, then that's just too bad.

In any case, a replacement TVS diode can be purchased for about $1 from Farnell, Mouser, Digikey.
