Hard disk disappeared

May 2nd, 2010, 9:27

A suddenly disk disappear of my system was happened today just trying to start my pc.
Yesterday all worked properly and i was turned off the pc normally. The next time i was try to start it, windows does not started making the screen showing the motherboard logo and when i used the windows disk to boot the system i received the message "no disk founded".
I placed my second hard disk and the system started normaly.
But the first disk is not showed in system neither in system management or devices. It just disappeared.
No viruses are founded in system or other malware. No new software was loaded.
What must i do to have make it appears again?
Thanks John

If it does not show up in the BIOS then there is some physical problem on this disk. You need to properly diagnose this to determine what your problem is. Post your disk and maybe we can give you a few idea. But normally without proper tools it is not easy to fix a drive with physical problems on it.

Its either a hardware or firmware problem of your harddisk or a hardware failure of your computer mainboard.

Its a good chance that your hard disk is a Seagate Barracude 7200.11 which is famous for this problem.

In this case you have following options (and with all other hard disks too, if they are still covered by warranty):

1. if the data is important for you, you need to contact a data recovery company
. data recovery costs are NOT covered by warranty

2. if the data is not important then RMA it - i.e. return it to shop or manufacturer for warranty replacement
. they replace only the drive

3. if you are out of warranty - then replace the hard disk with a new one.

If your data is important - dont play or gamble on Do It Yourself solutions .....
There are experienced collegues on this forum close to you - who migh assist you.

hi,
what model of your drive? does it spin up? any strange noise?
like falther said. it looks like hard drive itself problem.

If the disc spins up, then you may be a victim of the BSY firmware bug. In such cases Seagate offers free data recovery.

Otherwise, there is a straighforward DIY fix.

See this thread for details:

Good luck.

Can you tell me where he says this drive is a Seagate. Unless I am not reading what you are reading he has not even said what his drive is yet. He should state what the drive is before you supply a solution to this problem.

I think it would be a good idea if he could post here what his drive is and what he is seeing in the 'Bios this can help to make a determination on what he should do next or if it is even possible to do what you are suggesting on this one.

Even better : in Greece there is a valuable member of this forum who can help you when needing a PROFESSIONAL data recovery service. Search then PM "rafaela" (Xronis).

I thought falther knew something I didn't. Perhaps your question would best be directed to your colleague. ;-)

Actually, my response was intended to address falther's claim, namely that the owner of such a drive would have no option other than to pay for data recovery. This is clearly not true. In fact Seagate offers free data recovery in such cases. This is a well publicised policy. I find it strange that people in the DR business appear to be unaware of it.

Perhaps it was an oversight. I don't believe anyone would wilfully omit such information.

BTW Seagage does not offer free recovery unless you have around 500 dollars in your free pocket to give to them on this one.

Before this one was true but now try and find it and get it to work for you it does not exist anymore. They are not doing this one. if they were we would tell the guy if he acutally had a disk that was a Seagage in the first place. Contact Seagage with a drive and ask of them to recovery it for you for free. Then post on here if they did it or not.

All falther was stating was some facts and figures and some guess work from the description posted by the guy. If you read he said this could be or could sound like but did not acutally state that the guy had this drive. So you are ASSUMING what is not there.

It is better if the guy see the DR person in Greece and searches here for him he will be better off than all of this. He can find out what is wrong with his drive and get it fixed if he chooses to do so. Xronis is a top professional and can help this guy out.

Sometimes, on some models, with some FW versions, depending on where you bought the drive. If you think they will cover any drive with this issue, no questions asked, you are quite incorrect (unless they have changed their policy in the last month or two).

Doomer can give the definitive and authoritative answer to this. Please, do.

I would make it also sticky so people wouldn't have false expectations.

The free data recovery service was stopped about a year ago.

2 ppl i send there last time with busy error came back and said seagate evaluated the media and wanted 800 for the fix. Looks like they dont cover SD15 for free anymore. But yet another person reportedly got dat arecovered for free a month or so ago. So i really dont know what happening.

There was a recent thread (April 2010) at Seagate's forums where someone was authorised to send his drive to i365 for free data recovery. However, his drive was mishandled in transit to i365 and was returned to him with a stiction fault or seized motor, after he declined the quote.

So it does appear that Seagate are still accepting responsibility for bug related data loss.

This statement is correct
To be sure one have to call Seagate customer support and they will give one the exact answer about one's particular drive

SD15 drives are covered with free DR IF:
Those people called Seagate customer support and CS said "send it for DR to i365" and gave them CS number
Those people sent the drives to i365
The drives weren't tampered, so they in state covered by warranty (no marks on screws, missing screws, broken seals, broken external cases etc.)
The drives do not have additional issues (other than particular FW bug causing drive to be in BSY state)

Follow the rules and it will work

First of all check the model of your HDD.
Then check it with victoria for windows or MHDD (for dos).

Ty Doomer. Yet it is strange , as soon as i saw terminal on both those drives - i told the guys its the SD15 lock and suggested they try I365 for a free recovery. I didnt do anything to the drives , didnt touch the screws , nothing. Seagate techs in report said its not covered ( the problem they had ) so they came back and i did it - true enough , standart SD15 fix. Nothing else was wrong with the drives. Btw , rumor has it the Mississauga location of I365 lab sports their own russian tech wizard =)
