Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 1TB (UK repair needed)

June 4th, 2010, 14:24

A friend of a friend has an external HD on their Mac which tipped over and had a very slight fall

The disk is a Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 1TB

I had a quick look to assess the chances or recovery
(and would have been able to fix it if it was a logical issue)
but its physically not responding

Completely unrecognised when plugged directly into a SATA system

It does spin up (good)
without grinding sounds (good)
and without clicking (apart from initial expected? click as the heads sweep across the drive)

Anyone have any experience with these drives ?

The friend is likely to be looking for a UK based PRO to take a look

Done plenty of these and they're usually recoverable.

Depends if there's any platter damage, which in this case it sounds like you may well be OK :-)

I am having the same exact issue now. Originally this drive was in a "Lacie" external enclosure. I pulled it out to diagnose the issue and was unable to get BIOS to detect the drive.

Coincidentally , my desktop HD has the same exact model HDD, so I just swapped the PCB out thinking this was the next logical step( even though probably a hastily made decision).

No results. After research it seems like I could have either:
A. Corrupted firmware
B. Even though I swapped the PCB, since Hitachi uses NVRAM which stores information about head alighment, I would have to program the "donor PCB" to work correctly.

So....Any suggestions, or could you let me know what the actual problem ended up being xsoliman ...thanks!

Does it spin up or try to spin up?
