Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I am new to this message board, but not to data recovery. I would appreciate some help with a Fujitsu 2.5" SATA drive, model MHW2160BH, firmware 07febb-0081001c.
When I power the drive up, it makes a clicking sound about once a second for 12 seconds. Then it makes a louder click, and then 11 more clicks. Then it continues to spin.
I tried swapping an analog board with firmware 07ff4b-0040001d but it does exactly the same thing. The drive is not recognized by Data Rescue on my Mac.
I have not tried MHDD yet. I am getting a StarTech SATA card later today and I will see what MHDD says.
Does this sound like a crash? What would the next steps be?
Thanks in advance for your help.

well, if it grinds as well as clicks - yeah crash. And spining kills it. But if by crash u meen heads not working - well they might die by themselves , not due to a physical crash =)
To summ it up - clicking most of the time is dead head/s , preamp or damage to SA. There are other causes but they are rare.
