IBM Travelstar 20 GB

June 21st, 2010, 16:29

Hi,

I have a IBM Travelstar 20 GB IC25N020ATDA04 from a client.

In the beginning, we can read the disk ... several minutes later we can't access the disk. Lots of bad sectors - with Victoria.

At moment no access (1 week later). Start the spin for several times and then shutdown.

I need some advise.

Thanks in advance

Head gone is first thought that comes to mind (was weak and definitely gone).
Probably you have also media damage too.
Check SA for readability then make visual inspection with microscope.

Thank you for your comments: BlackST, guru.

So first try exchange the PCB, if no luck ... then clean room.

Thanks for the quick answer.

hi neuron,
why do you think it's PCB? any symptoms?

I myself have had a few "IC25N020ATDA04" in the past that had these exact symptoms which had a faulty PCB ;o)

But it's 50/50 !

The fact that it was "working" (albeit badly) then a lot of bads.... PCB do degradate that way ? (Oh, everything can be....)

yep I have seen exact problem (although it may not be the problem). Made me crazy when trying to recover the drive.

For example

Drive works fine, then a few bad sectors then it would knock. Culprit was PCB (maybe a problem with spindle speed control)

Hi guru,

Thanksssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Changed PCB and we recovered all data.

ddrescue - MacOSX and copy all data. Company data and some research project.
Another client happy.

Thanks on more time,
