PCB Swapping for Hitachi Travelstar 2.5 60GB SATA

Greetings ,

I am new here, and I have never done any PCB swapping before. So please be easy on me

I have a burned PCB on my HITACHI drive because of wrong voltage, I went and bought a matching PCB (I tried to match everything).
Now, what is the next step? just replace the PCB and go? or I must do other stuff?

I appreciate if someone could tell me if there is any online step by step guide.

You have to change Rom chip on the drive , use the search function on this forum you can find detailed help .

according to the guy who sold me the PCB, it should work with simply switching the PCB , can someone confirm this?

He's either lying, stupid or thinks you are gonna get lucky in a 10000/1 chance of a new PCB working without NVRAM transfer.

That or you have misunderstood him.

I have only ever seen it on one occasion where one PCB will work on two drives of this type without NVRAM transfer, and I've seen lots!!!

Whilst the PCB is certainly a compatible donor you will need to get that NV-RAM content over to it.

You may be able to adapt the resident NV-Ram on the part to work with the failed drive using specialist data recovery equipment also. Otherwise a physical swap will be required, this can also be tricky without the proper equipment.

Assess your own ability, if you are up to the component swap then determine which chip is the NV-RAM (you might get help here) and go for it. If the data is critical and you cannot run the risk of losing it (or if it belongs to somebody else), YOU MUST start trying to find a pro. This might just be he place to find that person.

The NVRAM chip is U6.

Transfer this over to the PCB and assuming it's "only" a PCB problem and the NVRAM is OK then it should work.

Only one mistake and you will ruin DIY chances and will make the recovery cost jump to $$$$.

Your local TV/AV repair shop should be able to do it for you. It's a relatively simple soldering job.

Alright guys,
I managed to get the NVRAM swapped to the compatible donor board , and connected the hardisk to my laptop via a USB-Sata adapter, however it didn't recognize it, I tried many times and once or twice I saw the partitions and the Auto-play dialog appears. But it disappeared before I copy the files. I think I am almost there , but I need some tips or a a software to help me out

Probably bad sectors.

Image it sector-by-sector with a non-windows imaging s/w to a good HDD.

(e.g. Media Tools Pro, dd_rescue)

Then try and read the image you have made.
