WD5000AAVS reporting as 0MB in Bios and Windows

July 19th, 2010, 19:00

I am attempting to get data off of this 500 gb western digital hard drive for a friend of my mothers. It has 7 years worth of photos on it and it was not backed up anywhere else. The hard drive is spinning no funny clicks or anything. But it only reports as 0mb in bios and in drive managment. I was wondering if this could be fixed with a PCB swap and if so where can I get a PCB?

It is unlikely that a PCB swap will be able to help. In the event that it is though it is not simply a case of finding one and swapping it with this drive.

Does the drive ID correctly other than the 0 MB problem?

In the BIOS it IDs as WDC ROM MODEL-SPIDER. According to some sites this points to a firmware issue. Can't find any firmware for it though.

This could be a firmware issue or a hardware issue. A data recovery pro will have the tools and facility to tell you which one.

I would find a guru in your area and see if they offer a free diagnostic, this way you will know what you are dealing with and be able to maker a decision on where to go.

The proper tools to diagnose this problem yourself will cost thousands in hard cash and time so recovery genuinely will be cheaper in this case.

it's not a cell phone or mp3 player. This is definitely a problem that only pro intervention with pro gear can solve. Sorry.
