Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi all,
I have an MK4021GAS Toshiba drive for data recovery. When I got it 1 fuse was gone on the board so I replaced and the drive spinned up and I could hear that this is coming up ready normally (I just listened it). I connected this to PC3000 and saw that when the head comes up ready (by the sound of it) at the same time all the PATA LEDs will come ON and the drive stays busy. I can not save CPs at all, not even if I take off the pcb and try to connect to it with terminal.
I would try hot-swap but for that I would need the CPs. I also tried to desolder the FLASH ROM chip (this is a big around 80pin square chip) and put onto another pcb of a working salvage drive but the problem moved. I also tried the patiente's pcb on the salvage drive with the salvage drive's FLASH and it worked so my patiente drive's pcb is good and it turned out that the big square chip is faulty.
Does anybody have any idea how can I force the board to be accessable and then I will able to save the CPs?
Thanks in advance,
Pal

this isn't a fauty rom, you probably haven't got the correct jumper settings set up correct. Connect the disk direct to ide channel on a pc and run mhdd.

I connected to a PC and then it works! Thanks for the post.
Why is that? It has bad sectors so I really need to connect this to PC3000. I have PC3000 portable and UDMA as well and it is the same on both of the PC3000.

You probably haven't set the CS (cable select) setting (on UDMA)

I have tried all the cable select settings on PC3000 UDMA and I tried on PC3000 portable as well and the portable version does the cable select automatically.
I am wondering if I can save the CPs of the board without PC3000 and then I can write it in to another board and then I will able to connect the drive to the utility.
Is there any software which let me save the CPs?

should you really be doing this on a customer hdd when you don't know what you are doing?
