August 3rd, 2010, 17:29

hi there, just wondering if this component is replaceable? the drive went pop with smoke and this is the only part i can find at fault.
If i were able to get on, and If i were able to solder it on could the drive work again?

what is the part called and where can they be bought from?
below is a picture of the part i need, it has WE 66 A on it.

thanks for any help.

Its called a TVS.
Do some search about TVS on this forum and you'll quickly understand how to solve (if nothing else is damaged).

The WE marking code is used by Vishay / General Semiconductor for a bidirectional 5V TVS diode, p/n SMAJ5.0CA.

Normally these diodes are unidirectional.

Even more confusing, the same marking is used by Vishay / General Semiconductor for an SMZG(J)3791A 12V zener diode.

If you can upload a photo of the whole corner of the PCB, I believe that will confirm that it is a 5V diode.

I am starting to feel that the bad diode is the least of your problems... :?
