Can I recover a Maxtor DMax10 with firmware?

August 9th, 2010, 19:01

Hi, first timer here.

I've been reading through a few of the threads here and I'm starting to realise that this HDD problem I have is very common and has probably been covered a fair few times on here already. My apologies if I haven't looked hard enough.

I've got this Maxtor Diamond Max 10, 160Gb [second hand] and first time I used it I wiped it and all was well. However next time I tried to use it, it didn't appear in the BIOS or any other system I attached it to. I've had it a while and just want to know if it's possible for any machine to recognise it again.
Model: 6L160P0 SABRE
Code: BAJ41G20

I'm guessing that when I wiped it, it also wiped the firmware or whatever it uses to communicate with the motherboard. So I've been on a bit of a mission looking for the firmware. Eventually I found the .ldr and .ram files with lots of .mod too.

Reading through the beginners thread it got me searching for a Firmware uploading tool, which led me to PC3000 which then led me to pcmx_dsp.exe and pcmx_pkr.exe. Now I can't find the executables but ran [what I think was] PC3000 but that couldn't detect the drive. I've used various other tools but they've had no luck either.

All I'd like to know is that would it be possible to resurrect the drive or is it a lost cause? I just need confirmation before I chuck it in the bin.

Thanks

Pro could fix, but (IMO) not worth it if there is no data involved

Pro, of professional guy.

You can't update the firmware just with the software. You also need to hardware tool that comunicates with the HD.

Okay, thanks for confirming that.
Just wanted to be sure before disposing of it.
