WD10EACS-00ZJB0 - no apparent fault but no access to LBA

Hello all,

Just received a drive in which I had told had been dropped. Obviously I expect to find a head fault. However, I am not sure if this is the issue. It is possible to read the full firmware on both heads 0 & 1. Tests on all of the 6 other heads come back as good. All the the firmware modules seem to be OK. However no LBA values are readable.

I've checked to see if there are issues with the g-list, translator, & recreated the rom from the firmware modules (original rom looked good anyway)

The drive is labeled up a WD Green. All of the firmware modules showing it is a ROYL drive the PCB on this disk is on this disk is more one I would associate with the WD Black II Sata III (Rectangular) not the typical diagonal cut out that started to be seen from the WD5000AAKS series onwards. However, it just looks like an early revision of the series as the U12 is definitely integrated.

Any thoughts?

That's not unusual for heads failure on these

That's unfortunate, I was rather hoping it wasn't, it being a 4 platter WD, I can't imagine parts will come easily for this one.
Any other ways to test the drive before a replacement is considered?

have you imaged heads 0 and 1 ? If not I would start there before you tinker Dr.

I still say head(s) are bad, dont be so quick to rule this out. The head tests you made are not 100%.

Also, SA is usually written at lower densities so some cases you will find SA can be read when data cant...

I really should have checked thoroughly before starting a new post, sorry. Looks like it's not so unusual for this series of disk.
Definitely looks like the heads (especially knowing it has taken physical shock). Depopulating the head map isn't doing me any favours in getting access to the good 'uns. I see user 'skyline' requires a matching ROM relating to this drive, and it looks as if I might require some working heads. I wonder if he'll care to do a swap

get compatible donor and try hot swap first before any physical work on the drive.

In my experience, I find Hulk family is not so good for HotSwap as compatible donor with close adaptives is difficult to source...
