Knows anybody about this problem

Seagate 7200.12 500GB, drive becomes ready,
but the data is not available,

Ready in MHDD, but cannot be initialised.

Most probably, firmware error.

In cases where SA is bad, the disk will sometimes show readiness. In cases where motor is bad, or heads are failed the PCB will show readiness also.

The problem needs to be correctly diagnosed before any realistic assumptions can be made.

What ID is shown when ready is reached? Does spindle remain powered? Do heads knock? Does take a long time to reach ready?

heads seems to be functional,

Doest any body have advice what to do, in terminal attached drive to rs232

I understand from the OP that it could read ~60k LBA practically anywhere in the drive. In my experience, a translator problem would normally manifest itself by denying LBA access from a certain point and thereon in until the end of the drive.

Sounds more like a bad head to me, but stand to be corrected

Hi Sean,

The words "when you scan media it will only scan ~60000LBA or so (anywhere in the drive practically)" ain't exactly capable of convincing me to put my money for bad heads. It sounds more like, for example, that if you start scan from 10K it will run till 70K, if it's from 20K, it will make it's way out till 80K and so on.

I can't bet on such behavior for the bad "physical" heads. I have witnessed bizarre symptoms due to the translator or RAM issues. Moreover, this poster has not mentioned the capacity of the drive in question; if it's anything below 320, we have already ruled out the heads.

However, it's kind of impossible for me to speak anything firmly without diagnosing the drive. Hopefully, neither for you too, eh?

Exactly so, can't beat a "hands-on" diagnosis rather than a sight unseen "best guess"
