Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB ST31500341AS Won't spin-up

August 26th, 2010, 22:12

My neighbor has an external Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB ST31500341AS drive in an external enclosure. She knocked it off her desk to the floor while running. I've taken the drive out of the enclosure and applied power and the drive is not spin-up. When I apply power I hear a soft moan/humm for about half a second and then it stops are repeats every over and over about a second appart.
I've also tried gently knocking the drive to see if something was stuck, didn't work.
I have not removed the circuit board and there is no visable damage to the board or the drive.

Is there a drop sensor that might have to be replaced?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Douggg

No sorry to say this one. You probably have a spindle motor problems on this one. If running the spindle motor can be damaged as for heads sticking to the platters of the HDD from impact. Sorry to say this is not a DIY job for somene who has never worked with Seagate drives before. If data is not important replace the drive and start over again. If data is important you have no other choice but to seek professional help.

No implicit guarantee about having 100 percent data, it likely may start from 1000/1500 in the Usa.

Do you think I could open the drive and free the heads to get the data off?

its not the heads that are holding the platters most likely. Its the spindle bent and seized. Platters need to be moved, non DIY by any means unfortunatly.

Do spindles get bent that easy?

If I were to buy an identical HD and build a DIY clearnroom how difficult would it be to swap platters between the drives?

Unfortunately, yes. It seems Seagates are particularly vulnerable.

Impossible. No offense.
