Barracuda 7200.12 doesn't power on, need diagnosis

September 15th, 2010, 18:35

After some problems with power supply my hard drive don't power on at all. Here is picture of disk board:

Are all those elements in yellow circle capacitors? Because on all except that in green circle there is no voltage drop, so either all are burned or current has different 0Ohm path(I'm measuring in circuit).
How do I determine values of broken elements in red circle? And is TVS diode that element in bottom right corner? After the damage PC mainboard couldn't start until disconnecting HDD, I have read it was caused by transil which allow to pass big current, should it be also replaced after that?

The TVS diode at the bottom RH corner is the 12V Transil.

The components inside the red circle are either inductors or low-ohm resistors. They are in series with the +5V supply. You can replace each with a wire link.

Here is the pinout of the SATA power connector:
http://pinouts.ru/Power/sata-power_pinout.shtml

The corresponding 5V TVS diode appears to be below the 8-pin serial EEPROM in the top LH corner. If it is shorted, snip it out with flush cutters. If there is no other damage, the drive should work without it, but you will no longer have any overvoltage protection on the +5V rail, so be absolutely sure your PSU is OK.

You can replace the diode with an SMAJ5.0A from Farnell, Mouser, Digikey.

The following URLs may help you identify the components:

Good luck.

Thanks, works like a charm - couldn't get 5V transil at local stores at the moment but after removing it and shortcutting burned elements hard drive started with all data untouched.
