Help recovering User/Master passwords from Toshiba MK6015MAP

September 15th, 2010, 19:45

Hello,

First of all I want to say thanks, as I have used this forum several times to fix several issues. This time my problem has not been answered so I decided to register and seek help with it.

As the title says I am trying to recover both the Master and the User password from a Toshiba MK6015MAP. Long story short I have a Beatmania kit that I spend quite a chunk of money on back in the day. Recently the kit has started throwing out HDD error mid game, and at different points in the game each time. When I open the machine I can hear the HDD clunking around.

I have contacted Konami and they have told me that they unfortuntally no longer offer support for this machine and they can not recover or replace my HDD for me. I have also tried to jsut buy a new (well used but you get the idea) kit, but unfortunatally noone is selling one at the momement as they have become scarce due to this exact issue.

After spending quite some time speaking with a few extremely helpfull members of the MAME crew I have come to a few understnadings. The HDD is protected by both a User and a Master password. Atleast the User if not also the Master are made of non-printable characters although we believe the Master to be printable characters.

I have gone out and purchased an identical drive to this drive (for far too much money  ). Using a weird combination of adapters (2.5 to 3.5 and vise versa) I have been able to boot the kit, have it unlock the drive, and then keep the drive running while I unplug it and plug it into my PC. Doing this and a few attempts (yay errors) I have been able to secure a byte-for-byte image of my drive and reimage it to the new drive. Now, I need to discover the binary that matches the passwords for the original drive so that I can put those passwords onto the new drive so the game with accept it.

We have tried just using the known passwords from old EEPROM dumps from the old old MAME data, but the passwords are of course unique per drive as they are to match the security dongles for the game. I have seen some threads on the site about doing this with Western Digital and several other manufacturers, but have yet to see anything on Toshiba.

Any help you guys could link me to would be greatly appreciated as I love this machine and really don't want to see it collect dust on me.

Hi

I have no idea what console it is you have there. But if you have managed to clone the drive doing a boot up- and swap ide interface to another machine that means the hdd gets unlocked somewhere on the boot up software?!
Now like i said- no idea what you have there.. is there a way to debug the startup process.. maybe there is a hack update to disable the password and use a unlocked drive..

The only thing i can think of is using the new hdd but trying to move the old PCB over to then new one.(it sounds easier said then done..but worth trying) So that the new drive uses the old drives password.
Now this sounds ideal but its likely not to work(its the just a concept) I have little experience with Toshiba at the moment so wait for a few more comments about this

-or-

To recover the password you will need to sent it to somebody with equipment and experience to rip it out of there (you might need to send the console too-since it unlocks the drive on boot up)

Lets see what happens

There must be a way to set the password on the console - like a recovery startup up- or maintanance mode. You would really need to speak to some bloke who assembled these consoles back in the day at Konami. They must have set the passwords on them somehow- and reset them if any warranty jobs came in for new hdd's

Hi..

Is this the kit you have?

If so forget the part where i said you need to send it with the hard drive. You going to need a tech to come to you :) If i were near you i would offer help just out of curiosities sake.

You got that in your bedroom? :D
