Once the drive is opened a spindle motor tool is used to check if the spindle is free and able to move.
I would just love to see such an advanced hi tech tool.

I'd like to know how they converted a SATA drive (7200.12) to an IDE type.
AFAICT, Seagate never manufactured PATA versions of the 7200.12 series.
