Clicking Seagate Momentus Drive - Repeated clicking sequence

September 27th, 2010, 15:30

Hi Guys

First time posting here so sorry for the noob type question, I have been given a Macbook with a failed hard drive in and have been asked to recover anything if possible.
I have plugged the drive into my PC and the drive spins up and feels fine but then it stats clicking, it feels as if the head is flicking from side to side.

The drive in question is a
Seagate Momentus
5400.3 120GB
Model - ST9120822AS

I have made a recording of the sound...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMOkLUU8QGo

it is just that repetative click...caclick...click...caclick....

After about 5 mins it stops spinning, I'm assuming this may just be a "sleep" power save function?

So, would it be worth replacing the PCB or from other peoples experience is this a problem with the internal "mechanics" ?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Rich

ps, the "plop" sound in the video is not the drive it was mic movement.

You can post terminal output if you want, but I'd call it real doubtful.

complete noob on HD recovery here, could you point me in the direction of getting terminal output from it?

Would I be right in thinking I need to do this...
http://sites.google.com/site/seagatefix/

so I need to go find a Serial <> TTL Adaptor ?

bad heads. new head stack assembly needed.
we've recovered around 50 of those so far, don't OPEN IT!
alignment is a bitch. head 2 is bitchy as well.

we'll do it for $500 - but i need the exact model number to see if we even have it

No, this procedure is for a completely different hard drive. The hardware used to interface with the terminal would be the same, but IMO you're really wasting your time with it. These drives are all bad and 99% have severe media damage.

This doesn't even begin to make sense.

You've recovered about 50 3.CAE drives from Macbooks with crashed heads have you? Forgive my scepticism, but "yeah, right" !!!

Oh wait, you just asked for the model number so maybe not.

And whats all this "alignment is a bitch" cobblers and "head 2 is bitchy" bullshit?

I stand to be corrected on all the above.
