Hello,
I was wondering if i could replace my tvs 12v diode marked LEK from ON Semiconductors (which is a SMBJ12A) with a tvs diode from a old hard drive marked BUF from st semiconductor (this is a SMBJ13A)
I'm just not sure, they both protect the 12v rail so it should be ok?
Thanks Nick

Yes, should work. However, be carefull there is no other short circuit in the pcb.
Better use a bench top power supply to test.

i don't think there is a other shortage in my pcb, checked all the resitors, none of them are faulty...
i use a power supply that has a good and steady 12v, and if there is a shortage it shuts down. Someone making pcb boards for his job will replace it for me.
will report back on sunday.
Thanks, Nick

The SMBJ13A has a higher breakdown voltage than the SMBJ12A. Both provide overvoltage protection, but the latter would have a better safety margin.

Would 1 extra volt affect my hdd?

This is a protection circuit. It only intervenes in case the power supply of you PC breaks down, so it wont make much difference for normal functionning of your drive.

Yes, i mean, when the powersupply would fail, would that extra volt damage the hard drive?
got myself a new powersupply so no worries about that.

Dont trust this disk any more; copy your data to a new drive.
