Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hello,
We operate a computer repair business in Australia and at times get a data recovery jobs from customers that are not willing to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars to retrieve their files. The customers want their data back but the data is not so critical that will pay alot of money.
Some customers would rather risk the loss of this data rather than spend a fortune on so called "guaranteed" data recovery.
So we were just wondering if someone here could direct us to someone who will make a good attempt to retrieve the data at a more affordable price. All type of recovery would be hardware issues where the device will not mount.
Can you recommend someone or a company like this? We know data recovery and affordable often do not belong in the same sentence. Are we just wasting our time?
Thought it was worth asking here.

I guess you will not find no one that could do that. I don't know how much you're willing to pay....
First: to send to other country costs money. Is this in your budget?
Second: the price of recoveries is high, because the tools are expensive and experience is required. Just by this you have to pay some big bucks.
Third: Hardware are the most expensive. If it was some logical/FW problems could be cheaper...
But more important: what's your medium budget?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
Shipping costs are not a drama.
There are many different customers with individual circumstances. This will determine how much they will pay for the data. This is not a one only job.
We would like to have a partnership with someone who will be able to trust and build an ongoing relationship with. The trick will be to build this trust and find someone reliable. At present we have fourteen jobs sitting on the bench ranging from SD Cards, usb, and hard drives.
We understand this work is expert in nature and requires specialist equipment. We are not trying to be cheap and find someone that will work for nothing, but trying to help our customers stay within their budget.

I am in NZ if thats close enough. I own and run a professional Data Recovery Company which has been in the business for over 10 years. In terms of costs, it depends, we think we are very competitive and only charge based on the time spent rather than the value of the work to the customer. We have the benefit of being 3 days by courier and 20% less than your dollar.
We have PC3000, PC3000 SSD (Flash) and DDI. 3 staff, and a success rate of above 90%.
We work on a No data No recovery fee basis and quote the job upfront so it only costs after we get a recovery and you have price certainty before you commit.
PM me and we can discuss what kind of rates you have in mind.
We can even work out a bulk deal for the jobs you have on hand if you like.

90%? I seriously doubt this, unless you selectively choose the cases you take on, in which case I guess is totally achievable.
I reckon at least 10 or 15% of cases I recieve have serious media damage, or have been previously damaged beyond repair by inexperienced shops or even over enthusiatic clients.

90% success rate can be, but I think the problem can be either find someone who can outsource the jobs from customers THEY DON'T WANT TO SPEND , or SEND OUT WHAT THE OP CAN'T OR DON'T WANT TO DO, but everything has a price. Outsourcing is not a sin - a win-win-win situation, instead, but it depends on MANY factors.
If the scenario is "keep the juice and leave troubles to someone else", it won't last long. Most probably this is not the case, but then I don't get why not stick to the 90% and refuse FROM THE BEGINNING the troublesome job or the whiners.
P.S. when I learnt to kick out the whiners and the troublemakers and being selective, +30% and a lot of time to spend having fun, in a few words A BETTER LIFE. This is enterprise, not playing or being on the dole or on the gov't payroll or spending the day we say "cazzeggiando" ...

80% is a real rate for proper data recovery cases for me. That can go up and down +-10% over a monthly period it all depends and is rather fluid

Sorry, that 90% success rate is from jobs where we quote and are approved to go ahead. Therefore the really hopeless cases don't tend to be included, although some people are desperate and we will try to recover anything (see pictures in other threads on here for the worst cases) and yes we happily outsource where I believe other companies have better skills in areas or when we are swamped. I feel that being professional means doing everything possible to try and achieve a successful outcome for the customer, that includes outsourcing, referring on and even helping competitors with parts/knowledge where it can help the customer.
