Cloning or Imaging a drive with corruption or bad blocks

October 27th, 2010, 5:20

Hi,

Im concerned if I back up drive this way that the data may not be intact when I do a full image restore to new hard drive.
Will I not be simply restoring the corrupt files back onto the new hard drive? Or is it safer to copy just data itself and reinstall os system after. One of the computers Im working on is Macbook Pro the other is and XP pc.

I chose this forum because I know Scott Moulton is the guru of these concerns.
I dont normally post in forums anymore because I find someones always responding with snarky condescending remarks I hope thats not the case here.

Thankyou

IF you clone something and it encounters a bad sector- then that file could be corrupt.
It depends what file encountered the bad block - sometimes there is no file on the bad block and what imaging software you used and how it handled the bad block.

If you know which files are corrupt - then you deal with fixing the issues manually- if you dont.
BACKUP NOW
get a new HDD and reinstall your OS - Then make a clone to image for later recovery.

BTW
Every forum will always have people that leave "snarky" remarks. There are allot of people on this forum against Scott and other who like him. Its a matter of opinion and business.

If you opt to clone- Use Norton Ghost that is available on Hirens BootCD- Using windows xp mode or the the Dos mode.

Remember to back up anyway.

Yep.

This is generally the better way to do things.

Sector by sector cloning, or imaging, is recommended when the file system is physically or logically damaged. Your data recovery software then works on the clone rather than the original drive in order to prevent additional damage.
