Does anyone now how to open a portable iomega eGo 1TB external drive safely with out damaging the case? I've included a link to it for reference. I'd like to remove the drive and swap it with one in a laptop. My attempts so far haven't worked and I'm trying not to destroy it in the process. If this isn't the best place to ask, would you mind redirecting me? Thanks for any help.

Yah I just opened one up here last week. You have to remove that black support on it. Around the entire case is like a lip mine was silver cause my case was silver. If you carefully put the drive where the light is on the right side of it and see the name on top. You can get a small very thin piece of wire and wedge under this lip and the very small opening on it. Then take a screw driver and pop up the lid on it. I got mine opened with no damage to the case on this one. Once it is open then you kind of have to pry out the HDD on it and the control card will come with it. But this one is easy to put back in with a new drive on it and can be wedged back into place and the lid pops back on. There is like 4 posts on this one in each cornor of it. I started just after the corner and not on the post to insert a very thin piece of medal into it and then my really thin flat head screw driver went in nicely and was able to pop off the 4 posts on this one. Good luck. First time I opened one part of the small silver band came off and this was how I could see how it was put together on it.

I know this is 2 years old, but someone that googles the same question might find it useful nevertheless.
I just opened one. You need to carefully pry open the upper lid, there are 10 brackets (3 on each of the long sides, 2 on each short) that keep it attached. It is relatively easy (although I managed to scratch it and break one of the brackets...), use something plastic to keep it pried while working on the other side. I had a Samsung 500gb 5400.6 8mb inside

Hi MMNNMM,
I have opened the plastic cover of my iomega 1 tb external hard drive and it looks exactly the same as in your picture but the sumsung hard drive is still sitting very firmly on the other piece of the plastic cover - I tried to apply some pressure but could not get it off - am trying not to damage it. Please suggest how to remove it completely form the case. Anticipate your kind reply soon. Thanks

Pry out the HDD from the bottom end(not the connector end) with a little force. Use Plastic tools to avoid damaging the drive or pcb.
