Samsung Spinpoint SP2514N Burned small component on PCB

October 30th, 2010, 23:15

First of all, sorry for my bad English.

I have a couple of questions about Samsung Spinpoint SP2514N hard drive for fzabkar or anyone else who know the answers.

I have one of them and one component on the PCB has burned 2 years ago... i have some important data on it to save (i used that hard drive for backup) and BIOS does not recognize it. When i connect it to the computer, it does not spinning up(not makeing any sound) and BIOS does not show any of the connected working drives in my computer (2 HDD's) and when i disconnect it, working drives shows in BIOS.

I set the multimeter to 200k ohm and measured the TVS diodes, vertical one close to the screw is showing 36.0 (I believe its for 12v) and horizontal one is showing 06.0 (believe its for 5v) on multimeter, is that a sing of working diodes ?

Both zero links are 00.0 on multimeter.

note: i measured components when drive was disconnected from the computer.

So here is the pictures of the burned component on PCB, i think its "inductor" so, can i just replace it with a wire and will hdd be working/ok after that? that burned component is measureing 00.0 on multimeter so is that ok or bad? what i need to do to fix the drive ?

Hi,
Best idea is to start a new thread.

Then post pictures of your drive - The Label, any pictures that you think may be burned or bad components or relevant in some way.

I would like to see clear pictures that are cropped to the relevant parts and resized to no more than 100% of the screen, but that is a personal thing.. saves loading time and bandwidth etc.

Then include all you can about symptoms - what you think the drive does/doesn't do and what you have done to it.

That way if you put a little effort into a good problem description the really smart people on here that know a lot more than I do about HDD's will be happier to help you out.

You may have same symptoms, but may not be same problem.

cheers ! :-)

HaQue, Thanks for your help and advice, I have reposted the questions on a new topic with photos, those which I think are relevant.

Cheers!
