Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi,
I've got a WD WD2500KS hdd which recently stopped working.
After it stopped working it came up in the bios as "WDC ROM MODEL-HAWK"
Now i have another disk of the exact same type, since i bought them together. They even have the same production date (12 jun 2006).
The old drive broke down a long time ago with the head clicking inside, since i didn't need any data from it so i didn't bother trying to fix it.
From the disk that broke now however i badly need some data...
I tried replacing the pcb from the current disk with the one from the old disk, but after that the new disk also came up clacking and clicking so probably the old pcb is gone for good.
Ive read a few things about replacing the U12 chip on these pcb's, can anyone say if this would still make sense or is it s lost cause?
Some numbers if this helps anyone:
- recent hard disk (which i need data off):
- sn :WCANK4251038
- mdl : WD2500KS-00MJB0
- DCM : DSBANT2AA
- pcb : 2060-701335-005 REV A
- old hard disk:
- sn : not available atm but can add if required.
- mdl : WD2500KS-00MJB0
- dcm : not available atm but can add if required.
- pcb : 2060-701335-005 REV A
Also, does anyone have any idea what the cost would be about for having a bunch of pictures (Nikon RAW *.nef format) off of this disk?
Thanks a million for helping out!!

Hi,
Very probably not the PCB but rather the heads.
If you send us the drive we'll make a free price estimate.
You can find our price forks on our website.

If your data is important I would take Dobre up on his offer and send him this drive. He can get back your data for you on it. Like he said it is not a PCB problem on this and you can not get back the data with a PCB swap.

Sounds reasonable enough, allthough there's certainly a limit on how much this data is worth to me...
I'll get in touch with Dobre this week
Thanks for your help
