How do i format a hard disk without using any windows cd?

November 10th, 2010, 8:57

My hard disk got screwed up during windows 7 installation and now it just won't finish install and stuck halfway a few hundred times.

What i need to do is just to go to DOS mode or something to reformat my hard disk to a clean state WITHOUT using any windows bootable cd or startup disk. Is it possible? And please advice me how. FYI, the 'safe mode with command prompt' wouldn't work too.

Thanks in advance.

What screwed up? What happend?
What is the actual chain of events that happen?
I've no real clue, but isn't Windows writing some data into the MBR (and whatever areas/tables there are else) of the hdd during installation? Might need to clean that stuff also..

If you're able to burn a disc you should have a look for some linux rescue CD would be my best guess..

You can try MHDD from here on this forum. This can test your disk and you can remap bad sectors and even do a zero fill on it. Try this one it is run under DOS.

A friend of mine had the same thing happen to her and using the linux rescue disk actually worked for her. Considering I don't know the events leading up to what's going on now, I can't guarantee that it'll work, but it's certainly worth a shot. If all else fails, you can just take it to a professional. Most places don't charge a whole lot to simply reformat a hard drive. Good luck!
