Can't read ST3300620AS Firmware 3.AAC

November 12th, 2010, 22:28

It was mounted in Antec MX-1 external enclosure with fan. It was used strictly as storage. Turned on, copied to or from & turned off. I removed it from MX-1 & used a Coolmax CD-350 adaptor to read it. Same results.

It spins up & makes very slight tick...tick, tick sound. I get USB icon but no "safe to disconnect" box. It is not seen in "disk management".

I have the same drive with firmware version 3.AAD that works perfectly.

Is it the PCB?

Will the PCB from the good drive fix the bad drive?

Do I need a pro?

Thanks for all the help,

Dave

Tick Tick Tick sound is normally heads or could be stuck heads. Not a lot to go on. But no the PCB will not help you out in changing it in this case. What is your drive make and model?

The drive is a Seagate ST3300620AS firmware version 3.AAC. 300 Gb drive.

The OP stated that the drive spins up, so it's not a stiction problem.

"Stuck heads" sounds like stiction to me.

Maybe something got lost in the translation.

No not all head that stick to a platter mean Striction on this one. Heads can stick to a platter and it is not Striction that causes this problem. Sorry but just becasue heads are stuck to a platter do not assume that striction is involved in this one.

I was referring to "stiction", not "striction". That's something else altogether.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/striction

I have no idea how it relates to hard drives, though.

I would have said Frank is president of the pedantic society, but he'd probably come back and say "I think you'll find it's the pedantry society"

P.S. It's a joke, not a dig Frank :D

Now that I, at least, have learned a couple new words that I will most likely never use, could I get an answer. Please? All I know about hard drives comes on a small sheet of paper inside the box they come in when they are brand new. I read some of these posts & an article on how to take one apart & thought you guys could save me about a hundred years of research. I know how difficult it is to diagnose problems long distance so if it can't be done in this case, I will move on. Thanks for the entertainment. :)

Sorry for all this one sailorman22, If your drive makes a tick tick tick noise you really can not fix this one on your own. You might want to check on the Seagate forum and see if you drive is under warrenty and send it in for RMA. Otherwise you will need to take this to someone in your area and have the heads looked at on this drive. More than likely one has failed and that is why it is tick tick tick on you. The heads are not able to read the Service Area zone and start the drive to initialize. That is your problem on this one.
