Can you describe the failure symptom?

If you upload a detailed photo, one of us may be able to help you repair your board, or at least confirm that the problem isn't elsewhere.

The HDD was pluged to a power supply that had inverted the polarity. This means the PCB recieved +12v in the ground pin. The small square chip with the following two engraved numbers

OA56511

You will need a new PCB.

But you will also need to transfer the NVRAM and possibly the ROM chip too (if the donor PCB hasn't got the same version).

Can you give me info on where to find new PCB, who makes NVRAM transfer and which is the ROM chip

The 8-pin part at the bottom RH corner of the MCU appears to be a Sanyo LE25FW206 EEPROM. You need to transfer this component, or its contents, to your donor PCB. Your local TV/AV repair shop should be able to do this for you.

I believe pcimage is telling you to match the important numbers on the MCU (the largest chip) as well. Note that some numbers will be date codes or batch codes. Those aren't important.

Hi, you are correct, it is a Sanyo LE25FW206 EEPROM.

As far as I understand, (I am not a specialist on this ) I have to transfer Sanyo LE25FW206 EEPROM to the new PCB (is this item what you call NVRAM)

Which are the important numbers on the MCU to match (the largest chip)
Find attached all the data I have collected fron the HDD and PCB (all MCU included)

Thank you for the assistance

The LE25FW206 is a flash memory device. The terms ROM, flash, EEPROM, EAROM, NVRAM are used / misused interchangeably, depending on the context.

In your case you definitely need to transfer the Sanyo part. As for the "ROM" chip, I don't know what pcimage is referring to. If the MCU is masked with ROM code that needs to be matched, then you need to compare the numbers on the large LSI chip. However, I suspect that pcimage is in error -- he may be thinking of an additional discrete 8-pin 93xx SPI EEPROM chip that was commonly used in earlier models. Your drive doesn't have such a chip.

The following may be a red herring, but this is what I make of the numbers on the MCU:

LSI --- manufactured by LSI Logic
MUSE-B2B2-NL --- manufacturer's part number
OA71256 --- Hitachi's internal p/n
0930CS --- YYWW date code, ie week 30 of 2009
PPC2759 --- ???
TPPC206 TH --- ??? made in THailand

The last two numbers are similar, but I don't know if they have any important meaning. They may refer to the internal ROM code. You could verify this by comparing two drives with the same factory firmware, or you could ask pcimage to clarify what he means. :?

Otherwise, here are two references that may help:

It's a trade secret. :-)

Joking aside, just pull the two locking tabs away from the connector. That will release the flex cable.

Thank you to let me know the secret. :)
I finally obtained a replacement PCB that I have to change the BIOS chip from the old PCB to the new PCB from:

Hello, I've just stumbled upon this thread after some googling. :)

Anyway I have the following problem. I have two Hitachi's HDDs (500GB and 1TB) that I got from a friend who didn't treat them very well. These are the problems:

500GB one has fried OA56511 chip (it gets HOT fast). :)
1TB one has the same chip, so as the last resort I could transfer it from 1TB to 500GB one, but 1TB "works", I mean it spins up and everything looks normal, but computer BIOS (on any computer I tried) can't see it. Since that guy used to connect and disconnect them with the power-on I presume that HDD's BIOS got damaged. Am I right or?

Anyway the model is: S/N MS03DHHK P/N: 0A38016 MODEL: HDT72101SLA360 and PCB is marked as: OA29989BA3129_Mzn92215RV

So, does anyone have one PCB that he/she doesn't need with working OA56511 chip or if anyone has EEPROM content or exact functioning PCB from the same model that he/she doesn't need (due to broken mechanics of the HDD or so)? Of course I'd prefer to fix 1TB one. :)

Thank you in advance for any help.

If you would like to repair the 500GB drive, then find a matching board and transfer the NVRAM chip at U5 to your donor PCB. Maybe you'll be lucky ...

FYI, U5 is located beneath the Samsung SDRAM at the left of this photo:

That said, I don't know how similar your 500GB and 1TB boards are. The LSI MCU contains some flash code, so you will need to determine if there are differences that will affect the interchangeability of the boards. AIUI, a straight board swap is not always safe on Hitachis because of the potential for NVRAM overwrite.

BTW, does the motor controller (OA56511) get hot even if the board is disconnected from the drive?

Sorry for the late reply...
Yep, the board on the picture is EXACTLY the same as the one on my 1TB drive, down to a resistor. Same LSI MCU as well. Any chance you have the dump for it?
And NO, the motor controller does NOT get hot when the board is disconnected from the drive, on 500GB one. Actually, when connected, you can hear constant and rhythmic sound of heads trying to find start position (or at least I think so). What does it mean? The chip itself is ok?
