Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, LBA=0, Firmware Corrupted

Hi all,
I have a Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200.11, ST31000333AS, 1CCF Firmware. I use this drive as my secondary drive, it spins up normally, BIOS recognizes it as 0MB and Windows 7 x64 Ultimate shows it as disk1 "unknown drive" under Disk Manager, and it also doesn't allow me to initialize the drive. I ran Seagate Tools for DOS and it showed a "Corrupted Firmware" error. I know that SDxx firmware has problems and that mine doesn't, it also doesn't need a firmware upgrade.

I read about the serial port connection solution, but it says that it only works for "BSY" errors and not for LBA=0 errors. Also, read that the only solution is Salvationdata HD Doctor for Seagate, but this software only comes with their data recovery bundle that costs more than US$500.

I really need to recover part of the information on this drive since its very important, don't matter if the drive is unusable after that. I even have another drive that may be used as donor for parts.

Can anyone please help with ANY solution?????

Actually, the solution is free and available, just search this message board more thoroughly.


All you need is to make an adapter (the parts cost very little) and then enter in the commands correctly, which have been posted numerous times.


I always suggest if the data is important you seek a professional.

I couldn't find where should i post me query so i am posting it here.

In last 3 three months i have lost 4 hard disk..
all of them were seagate.
1. 160 GB 2year old
2. 500 GB 5 months old
3. 500 GB freshly bought(1 month)
4. 500GB my friends probably 1 year old.

So what do you guys think may be the problem..
i am in a real crisis here...

I'd start by checking the power supply.

I thought the same before. So installed a new SMPS 450W...
and it looked fine to the mechanic also about the main power supply it also looks fine

In addition to that i also got a new motherboard
MSI G31TM-P21... last week. But that didn't solve the problem.

You trying to recover data by changing Power supply and motherboard? It won't happen.

You can prevent future problems by doing that, but not to recover data.

The "serial port serial port connection solution" will also work for the 0 LBA fault. It's even easier because you don't need to disconnect the PCB.

So I just plug the modified CA-42 cable and run the commands and thats it? I already ordered the cable so I'll post results then.

It is not that simple. You have to make sure you really have this problem first. Then second if it is not this problem and you use this fix you will brick your drive and game over. I would suggest before running off and doing the commands to take it to a DR shop and have them look at it first. They can tell you if this is what your real problem is on this drive. If that is what it is go home and try it. But just to warn you it can blow up in your face on this one. You can gain and you can lose at the same time. Good luck on it

I'm pretty sure is not the BSY error cause BIOS recognizes the drive...

I've been reading this guide http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/128807- ... 0011-hdds/ over and over to make sure I understand. So following that, I have the LBA=0 error. I'm a pretty advanced tech support guy, but never had this type of problems with hard drives. Anyway, I plan on taking all the precautions necessary so I don't loose any data on this drive since thats my main concern. Like I said before, I don't mind if the drive never works again once I've backed up all the data in it.
