faulty maxtor 250gb diamondmax21 stm3250310as please help !!

Hi guys,

the faulty drive is a maxtor 250gb diamondmax21 STM3250310AS

My PC has been hanging up the last few weeks for a few seconds and usually restarting. Last few days the hanging up has got more frequent and longer. Kept thinking it was avirus or os issue ( running windows 7). Now i cannot boot. the hard disk is detected in bios but in windows.

I heard no mechanical noises from the hard disk at all

Is it worthwile trying to replace the pcb from an identical hardisk ??

Any help to recover my data would be much appreciatd !!! thanks

harith

You problem is not the PCB on this one. You need to clone this drive now to a new one. After you can get back your data on it. From the new drive you can do as you please on it. But if you keep trying to make this one work it will fail for sure. Get a cloning software and a new drive and clone it as fat as possible. That is the best advise on this one for you.

To clone i use RecoverSoft Media Tools Professional 5.0 which works very good also with bad sectors in EBIOS mode.
In ebios mode it trys to read also bad sector, (until 32 times). If it can't read it bypass it and continue to clone.
The IDLE mode is faster but it hangs if bad sectors are found.

This software works in dos, therefore it is not necessary that the hard drive is detected in windows.
But is not freeware, you need to insert a serial number for the full version.

Good luck

If you accept the risks of DIY recovery attempts (i.e. you could make the situation worse, or even change a recoverable situation into an unrecoverable one), then search the forum for "clone" or "cloning" - this topic has been discussed many times. There are several software-only cloning utilities, including Media Tools Pro already mentioned, depending on factors like your budget, expectations of support, your skillset with other OS etc. etc.

Since you have chosen to buy commercial cloning software, you can get support from the vendor. Support from the vendor is one advantage of buying commercial software - which is why I mentioned that your choice can vary depending on your expectations of support. ;) Or perhaps michael chiklis will help you, since he recommended that software.

Personally I use ddrescue for DIY cloning, but you would need to have Linux skills (and ideally some experience using the program itself) to have the best chance of using it successfully - do not expect me to teach you to use that! As I explained before, there are other choices for cloning software recommended by other members, if you search the forum.

With respect, based on your comments, IMHO this situation probably needs skills which you don't have. Remote help via web forum is not suitable for every person or every case.
