Hi,

I have a western digital drive which is coming up with master hard disk failure, i've swapped the PCB with an identical hdd with the exact model and matching DCM and no luck still failure. I've checked the PCB from the original on the replacement drive and it works so it must be an internal problem with the drive. Can anyone suggest anything else I could try? Firmware maybe as im lead to believe it's on the platters and not chip based.

If you drive spins up and giving you that error, its less likely to be a PCB problem.
You should get accurate diagnostics and then go from there, otherwise you might create more problems.

Nothing else you can do without specialist tools I'm afraid.

Whats the actual symptoms? Clicking/spinning down at all?

No clicking or anything other than normal spin up. It doesn't sound like it's reading any data, and when attached to a PC it hangs in the bios and eventually comes up with Primary Master hard disk failure and blue screens my PC if you try and go any further.

You should visit DR company which own specialized tools(and know how to use them ) for dealing with such kind of problems. Continue further without accurate diagnostics will make things only worst. WD drives have both firmware based on platters and romware based on PCB. Both should match each other to have drive working. It is unique and matching model, DCM ... does not mean PCB will fit.
