Looking for someone to recover data from Seagate Freeagent

December 21st, 2010, 21:38

Hello

I have a Seagate Freeagent 500GB that beeps and won't be recognized. I see a quite a few similar postings and assume that my harddrive is dead at this point.
I took the drive out of the enclosure in hopes that the enclosure is the problem but even when connected to a PC via SATA cable, I see the same problem.
The drive contains family pictures but I can't afford the price of Seagate DR service, and I was wondering if there is any pro who could recover the data from the drive.

Thank you in advance.

Nobody is going to be able to give you much of an estimate without physically knowing what is wrong with your drive. Perhaps the better thing to do is for you to post how much you are willing/able to spend and see if anyone is willing to attempt the recovery for that price.

Based on what you are saying, my guess is that the drive was dropped or bumped and the heads are knocked off the parking ramp onto the platter surface, causing stiction. This particular series of drive can be quite difficult in getting the heads off without causing further damage to the head ands the platter surface and will most likely require a donor set of heads in order to get the drive to read.

Considering that there is a cost to the parts and considerable lab time to do such recoveries, I can't imagine any reputable lab doing such a project for less than $1000...unless they get lucky and are able to free the heads and get the drive working without having to change them. I suspect that if you offer to cover the cost of the parts, whether or not the project is recoverable, you might find that some labs might come down on the price, a bit.

Good luck!
