Barracuda failed, not reading

January 11th, 2011, 18:14

I have a Barracuda 9VP33EWE that is no longer being properly read by the OS. The HD is recognized and I can hear the heads move for a few moments and that's it. After that happens the spindle motor remains on, but the heads are silent. Trying to access the drive results in the OS just hanging forever while the HD is seemingly trying to do something.

What kind of issue is it if the spindle motor is fine and the platters do spin but the heads are not moving beyond the initial few motions?

Thanks.

Based on that only, no one can tell you exactly what's wrong.
What's the drive model?
Can you check terminal log from it?

9VP33EWE is a serial number, not a model number.

The first three characters suggest that your drive is a 7200.12, either an ST3750528AS or an ST31000528AS.

When you say that "the HD is recognized", what exactly do you mean? Does BIOS report it correct model number and capacity? If using Windows, can you see the drive in Device Manager? Disk Management? My Computer?
