Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS spins and one click

January 18th, 2011, 17:43

Hi all,

I got a ST9500420AS today that was in a Seagate Freeagent Go case. Drive wasn't being detected via USB. Removed the drive and connected via SATA. Powered up, drive spins up, gives one click and then 10 quick surges of what best I can describe as buzz noises. These stop and the drive keeps spinning.

Terminal output after 2 power on/off cycles:

Rst 0x10M
LED:00000047 FAddr:0000004C
Rst 0x10M
LED:00000047 FAddr:00000078

I've searched for this error and didn't find anything that helped me. Had a skip through my PC3K book, not knowledgeable enough yet seeing that I only received it last week.

Any direction would be appreciated.

This doesn't help me at all. I've been collecting faulty HDDs for the last few months for the purpose of learning, as well as paid a hefty amount for PC3K in order to upskill and learn the skills and gain the knowledge. Since this area is new to me I'm requesting advice, I'm not someone who's dropped his drive and is crying because I've lost my collection of MP3s, so I think you have the wrong impression. I've already learnt a lot from this forum and some of its helpful members.

As mention I was asking for any advice/direction on how to proceed with diagnosing the drive if anyone was willing to help.

Why not contact Ace for help?

I only received PC3K last week. I'm busy moving house so I haven't even installed it yet, it's still sitting in it's little blue box. Once I've got it up and running next month I can contact them, but was hoping for some advice in the mean time.

HD Guru's,

I have three questions I'd dearly like answered:

1) If magnetic heads do touch does that automatically equated dead head?

2) Is the U12 Rom only necessary to switch on Western Digitals

3) Do you switch the PBC when replacing head?

Please feel free to email your answer (I will not post it - unless you do) security@northcarolinpcs.com

Much Graditude,
M. N. Wyman
