I got this case a few times...
Once I tried to turn on the HDD, but it wasn´t spinning at all.
The terminal showed "Flash boot code checksum failure!".
I waited for a few minutes and the HDD started to spin again. I was able to save the data one time. The HDD didn´t start anymore later.
And the last time I got this case, I tested with another compatible PCB. The HDD started but not accessed. I put the original PCB back and the HDD accessed only one time.
They are note related but all tests are valid, right? Maybe the ROM was about to die...
I know this post is old, but I hope it can help someone future cases.
