Error only discovered by the writing process?

February 4th, 2011, 18:07

I've seen this error on a website about hard drives (in French). What do you call this sort of error?

Translation:

The error will not be treated as a bad block. Error only discovered during the writing process
and not the reading process. Can only be detected by professional software.

I don't really have a name for it i guess; but it could be caused by several things:

Faulty RW channel

Faulty Preamp

Faulty write element of heads

Failing media

I am sure there is more, but there are still a lot of possible issues that can cause a HDD to read, but not write properly.

FYI, some drives support the ATA Write-Read-Verify feature set, but with a performance penalty.
