I have a 2TB WD HD that was out of warranty that died. It initially gave two beeps and wouldn't spin up. Now the splatters spin up, I get several clicks, and then the drive spins down and repeats the process. Of course, it is not recognized in the computer. Ubuntu doesn't recognize the drive either. Are the heads dead? I take it that there is a lot more to it than finding a compatible donor drive, and swapping the heads. Can someone give me insights into the extent of the repairs that might be needed?

Sounds very much like a head assembly failure.

Bad news is that this is most definitely NOT a DIY job. Matching components is only part of the battle with these drives and if your data is valuable, find yourself a reputable pro in your area.

Thanks. I figures as much. There is a bulldozer next door building a new home. Maybe I'll ask them to see how flat they can make the drive.

Sell the PCB on eBay ... before you flatten the drive.
