Fujitsu Siemens [mja2250bh] PCB needed

March 19th, 2011, 19:10

Hello, I have a 2.5" SATA drive that won't power up after a liquid spill on the DC-DC board (as far as I can detect from the residue - probably tea :/ who does that...) and partially the motherboard.
Now, there was no liquid or residue on the HDD PCB, but it just won't power up. Tried external power supply, (recovery device), a diffrent laptop a desktop system since it's just the normal SATA Data and SATA Power connectors, but no go. Drive is from a MacBook Pro 2009 (unibody), which ofcourse is dead after that liquid spill. Liquid entered from top right and the HDD is on the down side, left. Laptop was quickly turned off and positioned to make gravity pull liquid to the right side, so the HDD should have been dry all the time.

So, that brings me to the conclusion that a power surge or simple shortout fried the controller on the HDD PCB.

There are no signs like overheating, electrical shorts or broken paths on the PCB, which probably means the controller itself is dead.
The following markings should indicate the specific board:

frontside PCB, visible to user:

106je (probably no reference to board type)
ca21350-b11x (probably the board type)

backside PCB, not visible unless detached (in a clean box/room ofcourse):

(exactly as they appear:)

ca26350-
b10304ba

Controller:
88i8831-bam2
ypm21337
0921 c0p

And the white label/sticker on the metal side of the HDD, front:

rev. a [1234 are striked thru, 56789 aren't - which probably just means Rev. A]
model: mja2250bh
type: ffs g1
part no. : ca07083-b50400ap
lba: 488397168
serial: k94dt97273a5
date: 2009-07-31

diagonal above a bar code with no designation: 0dfaca-00810020

wwn: 5000000e043d298dd

Since this is an "apple" drive, there are apple-specific numbers on there as well:

apple: 655-1546a
250gb m250s 655-1546a *lr9300jkp78ma* (yes, including those stars - probably means apple-designated serial)

And in a corner: fkl-m250<b>

which probably doesn't relate to the controller board.

Now, this is of course way more information than required to match a PCB to this drive, but I don't know which one of those numbers is the firmware version.
Is there anyone with a PCB that can replace this one? :)

Can you upload a detailed photo of the component side?

If you have a digital multimeter (US$10), there are some simple tests you can make to narrow down the fault.

I have a multimeter, but no picture of the component side since the client didn't want to leave the HDD. Of course, that makes the multimeter pretty useless as well :)

If the fault might still be pure electrical (like a blown DC-DC chip or power filter on the HDD PCB), I will of course try to get that HDD back for testing. Too bad I was already convinced the board requires complete replacement...

Some boards have a fuse, others have protection diodes. Some boards require that "adaptive" data be transferred from patient to donor. These data are stored in an EEPROM, or within the main MCU. I'm not a DR guy, so I don't know whether your board is one of these. If it is, then a straight board swap probably won't work.

I guess I'm going to need to inspect that board... I thought I saw an SPI EEPROM near the MCU/CPU on that board, so I'm probably going to have to move that to the new PCB (if I can find one). Maybe I'm wrong and it was just an i2c temp sensor (I hope so; I hate SMD soldering).

The following technical document may be of interest to you.

MJA2500BH, MJA2400BH, MJA2320BH, MJA2250BH, MJA2160BH, MJA2120BH, MJA2080BH Disk Drives Product/Maintenance Manual:
http://www.afastor.com.tw/download/pdf/ ... MJA2BH.pdf

Section 4.3 (Circuit Configuration) indicates that there are three onboard voltages that you should check — +1.15V Vcore, +2.5 Vio, and a -3.0V supply for the preamp.

That's a very interesting document. I'm guess I'll be doing a little measuring and research before declaring the PCB total loss. Thanks so far!

hi,
would you like to show me images of your PCB both side? i would like to check for you. :D

Find another working MJA2xxxBH drive with this marking:

xdfacx-00810020

You can do direct board swap.

The client shipped the broken MacBook to warranty services but didn't leave the HDD out :( what a shame... He'll notify me once it is returned to him.

I don't really get it, since there isn't anything they can do to recover the data. At least, nothing that I can't do. They probably don't even have 'procedures' for anything deeper than logical recovery.

I'll keep you posted, but for now, there's nothing I can do :( (which is kinda twisted since I'm getting paid to do this - maybe it's the will to "win" that data back).

Can somebody please verify this, before I spend way to much on a replacement disk?

I don't know. Open your own thread with your own problem :) There is no fix-all solution, and seeing your post count is only 4, you didn't really examine this board, did you?

Update for my own thread (this one): I have the disk in my possession! fzabkar, you up for some pictures or fault verification?

@Tommyboy, post a picture of the label and I can tell you what to match.

@Tommyboy, sorry to add, assuming that you are sure that it is pcb problem. But maybe you can describe what is the problem.

Is there someone still interested in helping me? I have the HDD, so I can do everything. It still doesn't spin up, it's not recognized and there still aren't any visible physical problems. Thanks to anyone who's responding :)

johnkeates take some pics of the controller board so we can see what you have.

Sorry for my late reply. I've been away during the past week.

Anyway, to answer your question, yes, please go ahead.

There you go:

If for some reason tinypic decided to kill the quality, I can upload them to my ADSL server, but it's only uploading at 80kbps.
Thanks for taking a look!

I can't see much from that, but this is what I'd be looking for:
