WD5000AAVS 00ZTB0 failure

Hi guys,

I have one of these disks from a blue light Mybookworld NAS. Went to access the NAS last night and nothing...no noises disk not spinning. no lights.

I pulled the drive out of enclosure and tried it in a PC with SATA and power hoping for the best. I do not know how long it had been like this as NAS is not accessed all the time.

THe BIOS did recognize a WD drive but of size 0.00MB ...

THe drive did not spin up or make any obvious noise i could hear over the PSU fan.

I think I *will* have to get an expert involved but I am keen to understand the likely causes/remedies so I can make sure that they have the right tools and approach to maximise chances of success AND they do not try and charge for unnecessary work.

For example does this sound like Firmware, PCB or an expensive open up the case in a clean room job

I am in UK, happy to answer questions or take recommendations of reliable specialists

PCimage from this forum is a good one. Free diagnostics as well.
Also a question. When BIOS sees the drive , does it give u FULL model number ?

Just been readinbg through the forums and am amazed by the depth of knowledged on display. Also re-read my post and I did not mean to imply that DR people try and rip off consumers. You do, however, read stories of how unknowledgable PC techs will 'have a go' charge the earth and end up making things more expensive and worse in the long run. Budget is tight! so I really do want to make sure that I don't have to sell my kidneys on ebay!

Anyhow having read forums my amateur diagnosis, (!) for what little it is worth, is that the PCB has prob gone. Perhaps other stuff too...

Well I am not planning on putting it back into the machine again...so things at least wont get significantly worse.

However I did take a pic of the bios screen on my phone. What I have just noticed is that the WD product name was actually for the other disk in the PC.

So in answer to your question the BIOS recognized that somethngi was on the SATA cable but had no name for it and a size of 0.00MB...

Hope it's not too difficult or expensive to get stuff off.

well if u confirming that the drive does not spin - chances are it will be cheap. Proper diagnostics needed however. Decide for urself what are you going to do. DIY , or have professionals take care of it.
