ST31000340AS Issues AFTER Busy Fix

May 4th, 2011, 18:42

Drive Info:
ST31000340AS
FW: SD35
Site: WUXISG
First 3 of Serial: 5QJ

Seagate website says it doesn't need to be updated, but the drive was staying busy when it came in. After Busy fix and Translator Regen in HD Doctor, the drive would go ready and you could read the boot sector. Began to image in DDI and about 3GB into the drive it began having unread sectors. Jumped around a bit and the drive was still getting unread sectors, so I figured maybe the FW had failed again (this has happened in the past while imaging larger 7200.11). After the second fix, I tried opening the drive in Data Compass through HD Doctor. I was able to see the file system, but all the folders are empty. Thought maybe there may be some bad FW modules, but all the FW modules read in fine.

Then I tried imaging it in PC3K (we have a dumbed down imaging-only version). The drive IDs and shows up as 128GB. After about 3GB of imaging, it begins to hit unread sectors.

Any suggestions on where to go from here? I can't imaging that it's one weak head, as the drive will not image anywhere past 3GB (and typically what I've seen with bad heads, you can choose to only image some and get partial data). Thinking it's a firmware issue, just don't know the fix for this one. If anyone needs any terminal output to help, just let me know the commands to generate said output and I'll gladly post it.

Thanks,

Dizi

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. In DDI and HD Doctor, it shows the correct LBA. However, in PC3K it shows 128GB.

No solutions for Salvation Data at all? Or anything I can do in the terminal?
