WD1200UE-00KVT0 Problem / device detects but no initialize

May 5th, 2011, 10:00

Hello and congrats for this pro forum.
I will try to be quick and specific with my issue and hope i learn something new.

I got this Scorpio WD1200EU from a client which stated that is was dead. From a first attempt (this drive was usb enclosed)
it seemed like that.
After a few attempts through usb port etc. etc. i got a disk recognition in the tray a disk info in device manager but in virutal disk managment
it was offline and couldnt not be initialized.
in all my trying to initialiaze the disk i got 2 types of messages : one was CRC error and the latest was I/O device error.
Now i got the disk out of the closure bought some adapters and tryed the same things with IDE (just to make sure its just not a burned usb)
when i power up the disk powers up when it reaches the point of "detecting devices..." after one minute i hear a "click" the disk shuts down
and theres a red flashing "disk name" and then it goes on to boot windows normally.
when inside the OS i plug out and re plug the molex power the disk turn on it appears in device manager and we got the whole first part of the story all over again. BUT the disk while on doesnt give clicking.
I hope i make sense here...should i try getting a pcb or its something else?
thanks in advance.

Hi,

Your drive has the typical symptom of damaged heads.
It's really not a DIY case, so I think you should seek professional help if your client needs his data back.

sure thing - not a pcb issue. Connecting drive directly to computer (in Windows) will not get the drive to work. You need professional tools to further investigate how damaged the drive is. And avoid checkdisk to run on the drive. Makes things worse.

Thanks so much for the replys.
what do you mean by "profesional help" and "prefesional tools" ?
Is there something i can learn to do my self? some kind of software or someone must
open it up?
Excuse my newbie questions i am a computer tech. but not much of a hdd tech :S

You understand the difference between logical and physical.
What happens is that logical is when the physical drive is working fine, so you can use a software to access it, as software is logical also.
If you have a physical problem, no logical software can help you, as you don't have access to the drive.

So in my case i guess only a pro must open it in a clean room etc etc. ?

That's right, that is the case.

Like @labtech said "...investigate how damaged the drive is..." you must find out the danage before you can do something. You must go for DR man when you can not pass this step.
