WDC WD1600JB problems

Hello, i got PATA HDD WDC WD1600JB, 160GB(100Mb/s cable), 8MB buffer. Drive is formatted into four partitions, two FAT32 and two NTFS. One of those NTFS partitions is running windows XP, second has pagefile. One FAT32 partition is beeing used as storage/backup while another one is completly clean. HD Tune 2.5 report: transfer min 2.3 MB/s max 57.4 MB/s average 48.1 MB/s. Access time 14.7 ms. Burst rate 77.6 MB/s. Power on time: 5620.

In API mode victoria4.46b runs fine, but when im switching to PIO mode(170h) and trying to get "passport", error message shows:

7:23:51 : [ATA protocol] DRQ!!! Press RESET or restart HDD!
7:23:51 : Get drive passport: Drive error!

This is what victoria4.46b API mode tells me about SMART:

WinDlg.exe, testing tool from WD website cannot proceed with testing and logs:

SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 1 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 65 (Error Log Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 1!

Should i be concerned? Is there anything i should do about this?

Neither to be honest. Instead I am trying to prevent the need for any of those. Those logs I've listed might indicate something, as it doesn't seem to be normal. I am currently running Victoria4.46b API test, output shows:

7:57:39 : Block 155646976 Error: UNCR
7:57:40 : Warning! Block start at 155647232 = 515 ms

+171 blocks in range from 31ms to 47ms

There is an efficient solution for preventing data loss , and it's called BACKUP.
SMART logs are not absolute truth about drive health and there are a lot of other factors to take into account.

Data Loss happens every day. IF your concearned about that information you should have it backed up.
With carbonite and mozy being roughly $50 for the year there is no excuse for NOT having those services.

If you have custom programs and configurations and are worried about that you can image your system to another drive
and or DVD'S with Ghost.

But is there any effective way to test that HDD? It's still working, I'm not having any bigger problems except those not-so positive logs which i have posted. Their content concerns me, as it shows that there might be something wrong. Sorry but i couldn't find better subforum for such a thread.

There are but involve technical stuff that is beyond the possibilities of end users.
Roughly, assuming the electric and thermal environment is correct and STABLE ( ? ) , I think a common actual HDD <=500 GB have to be replaced after 2,5/3 years more or less.

Yep!
And then a high percentage of those common actual drives will last twice as long and another similar quantity will last only half as long. So that might be as little as 1 to 1.5 years. Then there will be another significant number which will fail in the first 12 months.
Its a bit like playing roulette. So backup!

When there is no evident problem, reading and thinking do create it. This is what usually happens in my opinion.
There can be some slow sectors / areas that DO NOT trigger SMART or increase reallocated sector count / pending sector but actually affect performance heavily (depending on where the problem is).

Either this is searching for a non-existing problem just to talk about SMART or maybe the question is hidden - entering clairvoyance mode and seeing in my Black Ball :

"I use this cheap drive that has been working for some time and I have data I don't want to loose : is SMART monitoring enough and is this disk safe for me ?"

Was this the question ? If so, facing reality : if it is a drive that store important data it's not the right choice for me, but it's an opinion. And NO, SMART doesn't help much in predicting failures. It's like the warning lamp on dashboard that glow when the damage is already going on.
If the storage is intended for 24/7 or even 12/7 , this disk isn't the right choice at all but it may work for 10 years "decently" or it can fail tomorrow.
There are a lot of other factors that contribute to increase lifespan or accelerate damage, but discussing this way is pointless without measurements, knowing the environment and everything else.
