Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Okay, so a friend's hard drive "suddenly" stopped working properly. She says that she tried to use it and the computer notified her that she should format the hard drive, she rejected this and when she got home the hard drive did not work. The drive does not show up in the Device Manager but the light goes on and it does spin, but it makes a very subtle beep every few seconds. I am not a professional, I am more of an enthusiast. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have tried to search but I found nothing.
Thank You

Are you 100 percent sure it spins ? The beeps u described and the fact that the drive is 2.5 seems like a sticktion problem to me m8...

Well, it feels like it is spinning and also sounds like it, before every beep if you listen very closely it sounds like the sound effect they use in the movies to simulate a laser charging...that is the best discription I got.

No it can be and is not stiction. Is it like a 'laser zap' followed by an about 1000 Hz beep of no more than 1 / 1.5 seconds duration?
