Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hey,
My Laptop hard recently crashed...."No rebootable device found"
- Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB
- FW 0004SDM1
- ST9500420ASG
The Hard drive is not reading on another system
Looks like the PCB has gone, now I can buy the same hard drive and replace the PCB but the question is on the FirmWare...I am not getting the same FW anywhere.
- Which place can I get the same hard drive with the same FW
- Is there a way to install the same firmware on a new HD
Thanks a ton for your feedback

What makes you think it's the PCB at fault?
May 27th, 2011, 12:43
Took it to a Professional place and they said PCB is the issue..
Obviously would love to avoid the >$1000 they ask

Yep.
Any solution you can offer pls

You are not really giving anything to go on

Apologies...
What info would you need?
May 27th, 2011, 12:59
In order to get advice, you first need to give details as to what the symptoms of the drive are. Have a look at a few threads on this forum to get an idea of what sort of information to provide.
Does it spin up? Does it make unusual noises? Is it detected in the BIOS at least? etc etc
Provide us with something to work with, as DRC said. Or else it's like writing to a doctor and saying "My arm is sore. It was also sore last week. I went for an opinion at the hospital and they said my arm is sore". It doesn't give enough info to attempt a remote diagnosis.

Appreciate it.
1: HD made some noise and I rebooted the laptop
2: On reboot it said "No rebootable device found"
3: Not detected in BIOS
4: Not getting detected in another system
5: When connecting to another system, does not spin and gets hot

Any possibility that the laptop was dropped on the floor or something?
May 27th, 2011, 13:08
Dropped a few months ago sure.
Just sitting on a table when this happened

Any sounds like something want to moving inside but can't?

Connected to the system and it does not show any signs of turning on and no sign of any noise

PCB problem is possible.

From what you've said, and the fact that you took it to a 'professional' place and they said PCB problem, then that probably is the problem, or part of the problem.
In basic terms (if the PCB is the ONLY problem) the solution is to get an identical PCB and swap certain adaptive information from the faulty PCB to the replacement PCB. This is either stored on an 8-pin external rom chip, or inside the main controller chip. The former being first prize.
Best to upload a detailed photo of the component side of the PCB if you wish to proceed further.

If their diagnosis is correct, and if the adaptive data are stored in an 8-pin flash memory IC, then a PCB swap plus "ROM" transfer should cost you about US$50 - $70. You could use the board from a ST9500420AS, ie same model but without the free-fall protection. The firmware is identical.
