iomega nas box

I bought this from a friend, I'm not sure if it works or not. I've never played with one before, but now that I have one to play with, let the games begin.

What I know about it is it uses a totally different file system than ntfs or fat, hfs, xfs, something. I have a hd I bought off ebay with an os already installed, he apparently bought systems and upgraded them so I don't care about what is on it. I just need to know how to get this different file system installed on this hd and how to get this working on my network.



This is exactly what I got minus the base.

I have installed my 250gb hd, it spins up and lights come on and flicker so I'm assuming it works.

so my questions are as follows.

1) how do I format it?
2) how do I hook it up to my network? strait cable to my hub? it also has a USB but I'm assuming that's for configuring it somehow or lac of network connections.
3) how do I access it from my network? What address do I go to like 192.168.1.15 or do I use windows network places?

I'm not seeing it on my network.

The easiest and quickest way to get it running is to download the appropriate software from the vendors site, or install it from the CD - if you got it from your friend.

When the software is installed, you can configure the device. As default, it will map a number of drives to different shares. i.e. "S" may be mapped as "Music", etc. Once you install the software, it will auto-detect the device. If it doesn't, the IP may have been manually set on it, but don't worry about that for the moment. Just install the software and see how you get on............

Usually, those NAS (eth) units comes with Linux installed with some partitions
if you install new hdd inside you will have to start from scratch (which is not easy if u dono Linux)

BUT

there are Always some Custom Kernel for such boxes but needs some time to do it.
i suggest u the following:

install for example 500 GB (small hdd) do everything on it (install) then clone it to 1TB or whatever and re-size the partition when all goes OK

It's defiantly uncharted territory for me. I will read up on your link tomorrow and go from there. I had a feeling it wouldn't be as easy as putting a new drive in, telling it to format and be good to go.

I am not going to be able to do this without help.

I finally got a hold of iomega via live chat, but once the got the info from the nas box and found out it was out of warranty, he stated he couldn't help me.

While I was on iomega's site, I did find the firmware download for this nas box, hmnhd_firmware-2040-d31505203 which I downloaded, 75mb, but it is just a file, no extension and I have no idea what to do with it.

Being that I know I need to format this with a different file system, sgi xfs and somehow get that firmware on there, where do I start?

@ einstein9, I'm not planning on starting out with a big drive, I've got a 250 in stock to play with. If I go bigger, I can clone at that time.

I have several this and other model.

You connect to HUB or switch and from firefox put the address of NAS.
If the Box have a password ... reset ... little hole in the back.

And then you can format or upload, download your files in Macintosh, Linux or Windows OS.


In other situation you need to read the disks in a computer ... but this not the case.

ok, no firmware needed then? When I hooked the nas box up to my hub with the blank HD in, I used an IP sniffer and I didn't find it right off, I'll have to try again with a different sniffer.

It could be the box itself as well, but when I pulled the hd out and hooked it up to my pc, hd tune pro or hd sentinal said inanimate failure predicted and red flags up all over. I guess I'm presuming it was the hd that wasn't recognized by the box. Along with 2 dozen or so corrupt files when I was using ufs explorer.

I'll have to play with it again tomorrow.

those NAS drives comes with Linux installed, you have to plug the drive to linux machine partition it there and with the link i provided u will find many docs in how to do this, after that u may plug it back and use it, otherwise fixing new hdd inside will never result to anything.

If you have a working NAS with some firmware, you don't upgrade because sometime you could multiply the problems.

So first we try to access the box, see the commands and if everthing is ok we could upgrade.

First connect to HUB or Switch, and the NAS get the IP address from DHCP server (Router or an Linux/Unix server)

In Firefox browser you put http://<the IP address of the NAS Box>

And he present a nice web page with info about NAS, if you want to configure we need to use admin or a user.
No password - > little hole in the back - reset everything.


Since you don't have access to the box, we need to guide you.

So I will provide my details in private and give support.

ok, so it should be detected by the router through the DHCP server. Here is issue #1. I see the laptop I'm running, my nettalk (ip phone), and nothing more even though the nas box is connected, I don't think it is booting correctly.

Currently I have psychical access to the nas box itself.

So being that I reset the nas box, still don't see it on the network, am I looking at a paper weight? or do I need to get some kind of software and or format the HD with that different file system?

Like einstein has been saying, NAS units are typically running some small version of linux which then shares the bulk of the drive out to the network. Getting a new HD working in one is going to require installation of this linux system and partitioning of the drive, etc. Way more than just formatting.

If Iomega can't or won't give you something to install and set up the system then you may be out of luck, unless something like that exists out on the internet somewhere for your particular unit.
