Avice on IBM Deskstar sound

June 14th, 2011, 12:50

Hi

Please can people give advice regarding an IBM Deskstar IC35L040AVER07-0

I went to take an image of the drive from our old Windows 98SE desktop (little used in the past few years) using a usb adapter and external power supply and a laptop. The external power supply to the drive proved to have a dodgy connection which has probably caused the problem. The drive now no longer spins up. I have attached a sound file recorded from my phone.

The file is 27secs long and represents the time from power on to when the sound actually stops (the drive is then silent). There is a slight change/break in the sound around 13 seconds which is real and not any attempt on my part to edit the file at all. Also, a single distinct click in the first second is not from the drive. The sound is fairly quiet both in reality and on the recording.

The drive does contain old photos, homemade music and other stuff I would like to recover. Indeed I would dearly like to restore the drive to actually boot again into Windows 98se if at all possible.

Is it a case for professional data recovery in which case can anyone recommend a company in the United Kingdom. I'm in the south east in the county of Kent?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi,

I think you need a bit deeper diagnostic, but probably your drive has bad heads.

I know a good pro in the UK.
PM sent.

Seems struggling for read.... but the causes can be many.
Pro diagnose needed.

Thank you both for responding.

I guess as the drive doesn't actually spin up I was thinking that it would be drive motor related in some way, but I admit to having no experience in this area.

Regarding PM, I don't appear to have received it.
