PCB swap on Samsung HD082GJ

Hi all!

I have a Samsung HD082GJ drive that has failed on me and I was wondering if a PCB swap might give me the chance(even if slight) to get some business data off. The drive does spin up however, the BIOS does not recognize it. I've tried connecting it to another working PC but it was not recognized in that computer either. Would a PCB swap help? If so, which numbers are important in matching the correct PCB?

If it spins up then most likely not the PCB. Does it make any strange sounds, like clicking?

I don't hear anything unusual. It just sounds like a healthy hard drive as far as I can tell.

I read on another site that it could be a firmware problem and that switching the PCB could fix it...now I'm a complete newbie when it comes to data recovery so that sounds logical but I have no idea how much truth there is to that.

AIUI, Samsung boards don't need a "ROM" transfer, if they are properly matched. Some data recovery professionals would disagree, though.

In any case, I expect that you would be wasting your money with a board swap, but it shouldn't cost you too much to try.

So the consensus is that a PCB swap would not allow me to get the data off? Is there anything else I can try short of professional data recovery?
