Fried HD - wrong power supply

A friend plugged the wrong power supply into a WD external hard drive containing a WD3200JS-22PDB0.
No idea what the supplied voltage was - they said it was a laptop charger.
There are no audible signs of life when the disk is powered.
There is visible damage to U1 (see burn to foam).

Can you advise on next steps?

Need to purchase compatible PCB and educate yourself on ROM adaptive data transfer. Search for those key words on the forum and you will find a wealth of information.

There is a possibility that you may additional problems, but that should be the starting point.

The motor controller is damaged from what I can see on the picture. You'll need an identical PCB and to swap the adaptive info which is stored on the 8-legged chip at U12 to the new PCB. That's if nothing else is wrong, like the preamp or something else.

Thanks guys. Can I just transfer the whole chip at U12 onto the new PCB or do I need to do a data transfer?

Is there any way to diagnose other problems (e.g. preamp) before buying a new PCB?

Can you give a ballpark probability of a new PCB fixing the hd? (i.e. what are the chances of preamp/other damage off the PCB - I appreciate this will only be very approximate due to lack if info)

If it's ONLY the PCB failed then a new PCB with a U12 ROM transfer might well work for you.
